The Eyewitness News viewing area received a blast of winter weather Thursday night, as a winter storm dumped 2 to 6 inches of snow on the region.
Some areas received higher amounts of accumulation, and some areas even reported a rare occurrence of “thunder snow” during the storm, WCHS Meteorologist Doug Harlow said.
Road conditions remained slippery and hazardous on secondary roads and in the shade Friday morning.
Temperatures are expected to be between 10 to 15 degrees all day Friday with wind chills below zero. Tonight, temperatures will drop below zero. More snow is possible beginning Saturday afternoon, with 3 to 5 inches of expected. Higher amounts are possible in the mountains.
Winter storm warnings were posted in 17 counties in the region. Schools were canceled Friday in at least 40 counties.
Appalachian Power reported that nearly 5,200 customers were without power Friday, most of them in Cabell and Wayne counties.
