The winner of eight Tony awards during its original 1967 run and four more for its 1998 revival, "Cabaret" is a Broadway legend. "In musical theater it's pretty much a classic," Bil Neal, "Cabaret's" producer said. "We're doing the original version of "Cabaret." Good boy. Bad girl. Bad guy. Nazi Germany. Kander and Ebb. It's bittersweet chocolate all the way through. It's love stories that hurt." Arts Resources for the Tri-State is presenting its version of the iconic musical. Set in 1930s Germany during the rise of the Nazi Party, "Cabaret" focuses on life in the run-down Kit Kat Klub and a nearby boardinghouse. An American writer falls in love with a British singer as their romance plays out in the political turmoil of Berlin just prior to World War II. "'Cabaret' present a sort of contrast between the decadent cabaret and the harsh reality of life in Berlin in the thirties," Michael Naglee (Emcee) said. With growing unrest and the Nazis gaining strength the couple labors to decide if leaving Germany is the right move. All the while life goes on at the Kit Kat Klub, oblivious to the evil growing just outside its doors. "They have to maneuver social issues that come up and Cliff can't really ignore it for much longer," Andrea Parkins (Sally Bowles) said. "And so they kind of have a problem with that because Sally is quite happy to ignore what is going on."
