A former employee of the Southern Public Service Company was indicted by a Boone County grand jury on an embezzlement charge for allegedly stealing more than $105,000.
Andrea Michelle Kinder, 33, of Madison is accused of embezzling while working as a clerk at the company, according to a criminal complaint filed in Boone County Magistrate Court by Southern Public Service Company President Timothy Wilcox. Southern Public Service Company is a gas utility that has seven offices throughout the state, including an office in Madison.
Kinder is accused of keeping the money received from paying customers at the company, where she worked from Jan. 1, 2011, until her termination in March 2012.
West Virginia State Police say Kinder would pocket cash from active paying customers, but her actions went unnoticed because she manipulated the computer system and created a deficit on delinquent accounts that were rarely checked to cover the difference.
Wilcox did not want to speak about the details of the case because it is headed to trial, but told Eyewitness News that no customers have been affected by the alleged embezzlement.
