Boone County deputies arrested a man for allegedly making threats at an elementary school.
Herman Dewayne Pickens, 53, of Peytona was arrested about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and charged with making threats of terrorist acts at Sherman Elementary School in Comfort.
Deputies said they were made aware that Pickens had been in the school on several occasions and made specific threats to the staff of the school concerning a firearm.
Cpl. B.G. Browning said he encountered Pickens inside the school and said Pickens had a firearm holster on his belt where it was visible to students and staff.
Pickens also allegedly had a folding knife, which is prohibited on school grounds.
Deputies said they found a loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun in his car that was parked close to the school.
On at least two prior occasions this month, deputies said, Pickens brandished the empty holster to the staff and made threats of not leaving his gun in his vehicle the next time he came in to the school.
These acts made staff members fear for their safety and the lives of the children inside the school, according to a news release from Chief Deputy Chad Barker.
Pickens was taken before Magistrate Mona Snodgrass and arraigned on Wednesday. Bond was set at $100,000 property.
