Officials are informing students of the legal repercussions of making threats after a rash of reports caused a Kentucky school to go on lockdown status or evacuate.
Officials said 13 juvenile students are facing charges of terroristic threats in connection with threats being made at West Carter High School in Olive Hill. In one week, the school had three bomb threats and two threats of weapons being brought onto campus, School Resource Officer R. D. Porter said. School officials evacuated the school when bomb threats were called in and had to lock down the school when there was a weapon threat. No weapon or bomb was ever found in every investigation.
The repeated threats caused law enforcement to investigate and school courses to halt. "It's a direct hit on the finances every time it's called and there's no legitimate reason. At the same time, it's our job as emergency personnel to treat each threat seriously. It costs money to investigate each time and it's got to come to a stop," Porter said.
An assembly was held at the school Wednesday morning to inform the students about the legal repercussions of making false threats. There are additional charges pending for the 13 juveniles.
More than a dozen students are facing charges in connection with threats being made to a Carter County, Kentucky, school this week.
Officials said 13 students face charges after West Carter High School in Olive Hill had to be evacuated or put on lockdown after threats were made. Each time a threat was made, school activities were halted and law enforcement had to investigate.
Officers with the Olive Hill Police Department said they take every threat seriously, but unfounded threats cost money, waste time and unnecessarily worry parents.
