The quest to tackle obesity in West Virginia by targeting sugary drinks in schools may prompt lawmakers to revisit state law.
The interim Joint Committee on Health endorsed a draft bill Tuesday that would repeal a law meant to limit unhealthy beverages in schools.
The bill would leave state Board of Education policy and federal guidelines to promote such healthy alternatives as fruit juices and water.
Supporters say the law ended up conflicting with both board policy and the federal standards.
Several Republican lawmakers opposed endorsing the draft bill. They questioned whether fruit juices were as unhealthy as soft drinks. They also objected to handing management of school nutrition policy to the state Board of Education.
