The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is facing a Jan. 31 deadline to give pay raises to staff at the state's psychiatric hospitals.
The Charleston Daily Mail reported that a Kanawha County Circuit Court judge warned the agency in a recent order that he would find it in contempt of court if it doesn't meet the deadline. The agency also would face daily fines of $50 per employee.
Judge Duke Bloom's order stems from his 2009 ruling requiring the DHHR to provide more than a half million dollars in raises. In October, the judge ordered the DHHR to comply.
DHHR spokeswoman Marsha Dadisman says the agency doesn't comment on pending litigation. But she says the agency's policy is to comply with all orders from the court.
