The West Virginia 511 system was introduced early December. And already more than 9,000 people have used the new roadside system. To top that, it is already getting great reviews. "That'd be very helpful to tell people how to get where they're going the best way," said South Charleston resident, James Moore. And to be helpful is just what the new West Virginia 511 system plans to do. The WV Department of Transportation launched the new system hoping to make traveling a little easier for everyone. "The West Virginia 511 Traveler Information System is just a system that allows the traveling public to get as much information as they need to make better choice and decisions about traveling," said Brent Walker of WV Department of Transportation. The department has made it convenient for anyone to use the 511 system by giving travelers three ways to check road advisories, including conditions and closures. The first option is by phone. You can simply dial 511 and receive travel information. The second option is by checking on the system's web site, WV511.org. And on there you can see a map of West Virginia and all of the up to the minute advisories across the state. But if you're out and about and not able to browse the internet, don't worry because there's an app for that. Any smartphone owner can download the WV Drive Safe app, which is another reason why 511 is so convenient for travel. "It's very helpful because that'll help you get exact where you're going the fastest way, won't have to sit there," said Moore, "And if there's some map you'll know it's there and you can avoid it."
