In the wake of the horrific school massacre in Connecticut, there have been several unsettling moments surrounding our schools right here at home.
It seems a day doesn't pass that rumors, Facebook posts, texts and tweets surface about a potentially dangerous situation involving our own children.
Parents frantically search for answers from administrators, teachers and local authorities, needing to know that the ones they love are safe and free from harm.
Many of those parents turn to us for news about their school and their kids.
Here at Eyewitness News we have made a conscious decision to avoid reporting many of the rumors and hearsay concerning our schools. Thankfully, all of the whispers about "hit lists" or threats have proven to be unfounded.
Sadly, in the wake of such a massive tragedy like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary, some take advantage of the situation to create chaos and fear. They do it for attention or for the rush of making mischief.
There also are cases of well-meaning people who get caught up in the emotions of the day and either misunderstand or overreact to something that's really not a cause for concern.
Here at Eyewitness News, our job is to report stories in an honest and responsible manner. We'll do our best to avoid spreading fear and confusion during this very difficult time by only reporting on credible, recognized threats.
We're not going to spread rumors – that doesn't serve anyone.
If you have specific questions or concerns about your local school, feel free to give us a call. We may be able to shed some light on a particular situation that will help give you peace of mind.
This is a tough time for all of us. Our commitment is to give you the news you need and want.
Thanks for watching.
