The Kanawha Valley is losing its only daily American Red Cross blood donation center.
The Red Cross plans to close the center in Charleston on Dec. 31. Donors in the Kanawha Valley will have to go to either a one-day local blood drive or travel to other blood donation centers in the state.
A spokeswoman for the nonprofit organization's Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region says the center's closure is part of an effort to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Spokeswoman Marianne Spampinato told the Charleston Daily Mail ) that the Red Cross also plans to eliminate the jobs of 45 workers in the region, effective Dec. 31.
She said the Red Cross' other blood donation centers in Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg and Wheeling won't be affected by the cutbacks.
