The Nelsonville Police Department in Ohio has arrested three suspects in connection with vandalism that destroyed the Public Square's Christmas decorations.
Justin Huling, 24, of Cincinnati, Taylor Whitehill, 23, of Mason and James Degrace, 24, of West Chester were arrested, Sgt. Ed Kurtz of the Nelsonville Police Department said.
On Friday, city officials noticed the decorations were destroyed. Kurtz said the suspects were visiting the area and admitted to police they were drunk at the time.
Huling and Whitehill were charged with vandalism, and Degrace was charged with failure to report a crime. Huling and Whitehill were reportedly visiting Degrace who attends college in Nelsonville.
Police are trying to determine who destroyed Christmas decorations at a public square in Athens County, Ohio.
Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said the vandal or vandals destroyed every decorative nutcracker that was lining the streets in Nelsonville. The Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce worked for four years to create a "North Pole" in the Public Square.
The decorations were discovered Friday morning. "As a member of the community that worked hard to raise money and did the work to decorate the square, it feels like we've been violated. It will not stop us from continuing the North Pole Nelsonville Project. We hope we can find whoever did this. We will not stand for this," said Miki Brooks, a member of the Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce.
There were four statues valued at $600 each. A $3,500 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the Athens County Sheriff Department or the Nelsonville Police Chief Jason Wallace.
