Powerball ticket sales are surging in West Virginia as players buy chances to win the largest jackpot in the multistate game's history.
West Virginia Lottery Director John Musgrave says sales for Saturday's drawing topped $1 million. Lottery officials expect strong sales again for Wednesday's drawing.
Wednesday's jackpot was first posted at $425 million. It was revised upward to $500 million when brisk sales increased the payout.
Eight Powerball players in West Virginia have won jackpots. They include Jack Whittaker, who won a $314.9 million jackpot in 2002, and Randy Smith, who won a $79 million prize in 2010.
Anyone looking for some spare cash for the holidays might want to consider investing a couple of dollars in some lottery tickets. You could put a lot of gifts under the tree with $425 million.
That’s what the Powerball jackpot has climbed to after no one came up with the lucky numbers for Saturday night’s drawing. The amount is the largest cash prize in the history of the game.
There was a mad dash Saturday night for the last-minute chance to win the jackpot that was then estimated at $325 million.
What could you buy with $425 million? How about 2,000 Ferraris or the country of Anguilla located in the Caribbean?
The $425 million jackpot up for grabs surpasses the previous Powerball record of $365 million. That windfall was claimed by eight coworkers in Lincoln, Neb., in 2006.
The odds of winning $425 million are about 1 in 175 million, or to put it another way, that is about 25 times less likely than you winning an Academy award.
If you want to take your shot at the big prize, you still have plenty of time. The next drawing will be Wednesday night.
