The holiday season combined with the impact of Hurricane Sandy can make a perfect storm for fraudulent organizations to take advantage of generous West Virginians.
There are some simple steps to take to make sure you don't fall victim to scam artists this season, according to a news release from Secretary of State Natalie Tennant's Office.
First, know your charity - never give to a charity that you know nothing about and that refuses to answer questions. Do not give into pressure and don't feel as though you must donate immediately.
You also need to demand identification and be prudent when giving your credit card number - write a check and use the charity's full name.
In addition, do your research and check the secretary of state's searchable database. If you have questions about a charity call the Secretary of State's Office at (304) 558-6000.
