Clay , Clay County , West Virginia

A former statewide political candidate already facing charges for shooting a man is in trouble yet again. This time he's accused of threatening the Clay County sheriff.

"As long as I'm telling the truth and I've got Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I've got nothing to fear," Hiram Lewis said during an interview at his father's home in Procious.

The attorney and former U.S. Senate and West Virginia attorney general candidate is fighting new criminal charges, now accused of threatening a state's witness. That witness is Clay County Sheriff Randy Holcomb.

"It's 100% false accusations and false witness against me. I know that God will protect his people and deliver from false witnesses," he says.

State police arrested Lewis on Saturday. He's accused of going to the sheriff's home and asking him to go to the Clay County prosecutor's office and have them dismiss malicious wounding and wanton endangerment charges against him.

In June, Lewis was arrested after allegedly shooting Steven Bogart in the leg at his Procious home, but claims it was in self-defense.

Troopers then say he told the sheriff he might have to sue over his arrest, and that Sheriff Holcomb and Trooper Bryan Young were the only two left to testify against him after the slaying of Cpl. Marshall Bailey, which he believed happened because of "spiritual wrongdoing done to him."

"I assume he took where I was talking about we need to be prepared for judgement, and I used Trooper Bailey as an example. I assume that's where he got that," said Lewis.

Lewis doesn't deny going to the sheriff's home, but says he did so as a friend, in hopes he would put in a good word for him at the prosecutor's office. Lewis said Holcomb said he wouldn't do that because it was unethical.

Lewis says a church was considering him for a pastor's position but they were concerned about his criminal charges. He denies any intimidation.

"The only way I can end up in jail in this whole thing is through corruption, false witnesses or ignorance of the law because I've done nothing wrong," he said.

Lewis will be arraigned in Clay County Circuit Court at the end of the month on the shooting charges. The witness intimidation is a misdemeanor, and he posted a $5,000 bond the day of his arrest.

Holcomb denied comment on the arrest, citing that it was an open investigation.

Former statewide political candidate, Hiram Lewis, is in trouble for allegedly intimidating the Clay County Sheriff, who is a witness in his shooting case.

According to a criminal complaint, Lewis showed up at Sheriff Randy Holcomb's camp and told him to dismiss the charges against him or he would sue him.

Earlier this year, Lewis was charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment for shooting a man in the leg. Lewis claims self defense in that crime.

Lewis allegedly told Sheriff Holcomb that he and a trooper were the only two witnesses left to testify against him. The third witness would have been fallen trooper, Corporal Marshall Bailey. Lewis allegedly said he believed Bailey was killed in the line of duty because of the "wrongdoing Bailey had done to him."
