A man has been sentenced for his role in hitting and killing a woman walking along U.S. Route 60 in July 2011. Jackie Dale Hewlett, 41, was sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court on Thursday. Hewlett was sentenced to five years of probation and 100 hours of community service as part of a plea agreement, Wayne County Prosecutor Tom Plymale said. On July 10, 2011, Candy Mallory, 38, was hit and killed in the early morning hours as she was walking along Route 60 near Ceredo. Hours later, her body was discovered on an embankment by two fishermen. West Virginia state troopers located the car with front-end damage that Hewlett was driving and tested it for DNA evidence. Prosecutors said Hewlett pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Plymale said that a three-year prison sentence was suspended because Hewlett had no criminal record and they could not find any aggravated circumstances surrounding the accident. The case against a man involved in a fatal hit and run back in the summer will go to a grand jury next year. Trooper Chapman with the WVSP testified in a Wayne county courtroom Tuesday that DNA on the suspect's vehicle matched that of the victim - Candy Mallory. The fatal accident happened near Camden Park along Route 60. Her body was found over an embankment the next day. Magistrate Teddy Mays bound the case over to a grand jury and also reduced Hewlett's bond by half -- to $25,000 dollars cash only. State police have arrested a man they say was involved in a fatal hit and run this summer in Wayne County. Jackie Dale Hewlett is charged with negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident causing death or injury. It happened along route 60, near Camden Park. Candy Mallory was walking along route 60 when she was struck by the car. Some men fishing in the area found her body over an embankment the next day. Police found the 1990s model Chevy Cavalier they believed was the car involved in mid-July. They say a crime lab linked evidence found on that car to the suspect they've arrested. He's in the Western Regional Jail on $50,000 bond. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
