A man who was charged with assault after his baby was hospitalized for serious injuries while in his care, pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday.
Jerry Schrode appeared in Ironton Common Pleas Court and pleaded guilty to felonious assault, the Lawrence County Prosecutor's Office said. Schrode's 6-month old daughter was hospitalized in July this year with brain bleeding. Police accused Schrode of shaking and throwing his daughter. Schrode was sentenced to five years in prison.
Crystal Sowards, Schrode's ex-wife, said that he was to appear in court for a custody hearing but pleaded guilty to the assault charges. Sowards said Child Protective Services was trying to keep him from having custody of his children if he got out of jail.
Schrode was being investigated in two other abuse cases in Boyd County, Kentucky, but was never indicted in one and the second was dismissed.
