Page, Fayette County , West Virginia

State police say they had no choice but to shoot a man who was allegedly pointing a gun at them while they were trying to serve a search warrant.

Eyewitness News was the only crew on scene shortly after the initial call came in that shots had been fired at the home on South Page Bottom Road in Page.

New information was released Friday about what happened inside the home in Fayette County around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday.

State police say Ronald Reese, 55, was under investigation for selling drugs when they went to his home to serve a search warrant. It was there they say Reese pointed a gun at them and refused their commands to drop his weapon.

First Sgt. Greg Duckworth says Reese was shot three times. His injuries were not considered life-threatening. We're told he was shot in the arm, the leg, and the groin area. He was flown to a Charleston hospital where he underwent surgery.

A man living at the home, who did not wish to be identified or go on camera, believes Reese may have thought someone was trying to break in because there had been several burglaries in the area recently, but state police say they made it clear who they were when they were at his door.

"In an instance like that training kicks in and they're well trained. We do this almost daily and 99.9% of the time it don't happen like this and it plays out the way it should. An incident like this happens and training kicks in and our guys got the job done," said Duckworth.

When Reese is released from the hospital, state police say he'll be charged with distribution of an illegal substance, brandishing, and wanton endangerment.

Eyewitness News has learned the name of the man shot by a troopers while they served a search warrant in Fayette County.

Ronald Reese, 55, of Page was shot at his home along South Page Road during Thursday's incident about 10 p.m., West Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Michael Baylous said. When State Police entered the home, they allegedly found Reese brandishing a handgun toward them and he was shot by a trooper when he refused to obey commands to drop the weapon.

Reese's injuries appear to be non-life threatening, but he remains at a Charleston hospital. The investigation is ongoing.
