Winfield police said they used a Taser on an alleged drunken driver who fled from police in his vehicle and refused to cooperate after he was stopped.
Jerry Brian Davis, 21, was charged with driving under the influence and obstructing police following an incident that occurred about 10:40 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Winfield Police Department.
An officer conducting a DUI patrol saw a vehicle traveling on Route 817 at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction, entering the northbound exit ramp of the bridge. The driver of the vehicle lost control of the truck and crashed into the earth mound at the base of the bridge. A passenger fled the vehicle asking for help and told the officer that the driver was drunk and angry, the release said.
The officer said the suspect left the vehicle and appeared to be unsteady on his feet. He allegedly approached the officer in a threatening manner and refused to comply with instructions to get on the ground. The officer used a Taser to subdue the suspect.
Davis was transported to the sheriff’s department for processing, where he refused to cooperate, police said. He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center in Teays Valley for treatment and transported to the Western Regional Jail.
