Young horror fans today probably think of the "Twilight" series when they hear the word vampire. But the non-sparkling Lord of the Undead is the main focus and title character of the new Curtains Up Players production of "Dracula: The Musical."

"A lot of people see it as Halloween Dracula," said Jonathan Lamp, who plays the title role. "I've come to suck your blood. But it actually follows the book a little bit more. In the book it really is more of a love story."

The show's music is by Frank Wildhorn, the prolific and polarizing American composer also responsible for the musicals "Jekyll & Hyde," "Carmen," "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Wildhorn's work has received mixed reviews.

Jane Modlin plays Lucy. "It is the traditional story of Dracula," Modlin said. "But in addition to being Dracula the bloodthirsty monster, Dracula falls in love with the beautiful Mina and wants to live his life with her. It's set to some beautiful songs and some eerie, haunting melodies and there's some fun numbers."

"Dracula: The Musical" was not a critical or commercial success when it debuted on Broadway in 2004. It ran for only 154 performances and received mainly negative reviews. However, with interest in vampires at what may be an all-time high, CUP is taking the chance that Halloween audiences will want to see the infamous count on stage.

"If you know Dracula as a vampire, as someone who feeds from other people and is also a very romantic man then that is the Dracula that you will see," said the director, Clara Adkins.
