The mother of a deputy U.S. marshal killed last year is being recognized by the FBI for the work she now does with crime victims and the families of fallen law enforcement officers.
Assistant Director David Cuthbertson of the Criminal Justice Information Services division in Clarksburg will give Pamela Hotsinpiller the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award on Monday.
Her son Derek was killed Feb. 16, 2011, in a shootout with a fugitive in Elkins. He was only 24 and just embarking on his law enforcement career when he became the first deputy marshal killed by gunfire in 19 years.
Pamela Hotsinpiller spent 35 years as a special education teacher but changed her focus after Derek's death.
She also established a scholarship fund in his name and her late husband's name.
