A Kanawha County sheriff’s deputy responding to a call about a possible overdose in Rand had to use a Taser on a man who attempted to assault the officer while a woman was being treated by paramedics, authorities said.
Lawrence P. Richmond, 47, of 5118 Raven Drive is accused of assaulting a police officer, obstructing an officer, battery on a police officer and refusing to be fingerprinted following the incident that occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy was responding to the home to investigate a report that a woman had taken an overdose of medication. While on his way, Metro 911 told the deputy that a man had called and said the woman had not taken any medication and no medical response was necessary.
When the deputy arrived, the release said, he was confronted by Richmond, who said the woman was OK and had not taken any medication as once thought. The deputy insisted that he speak to the woman, and the suspect became belligerent and started yelling at the deputy, the release said. The deputy found the woman slumped over a chair and appeared to be in and out of consciousness. He called for an ambulance.
As paramedics treated the woman, the suspect became more aggressive and attempted to attack the deputy, who used a Taser to subdue the suspect, the release said. Richmond was taken to the sheriff’s office, where he allegedly refused to be fingerprinted. The suspect requested medical attention from bruising caused by the Taser. He was taken to Thomas Memorial Hospital where he was treated before being transported to South Central Regional Jail.
