A firefighter is remembered in Charleston for his courage, diligence and dedication.
Joey King was a Davis Creek Volunteer firefighter. Last winter, King fell off a bridge along Corridor G while investigating an arson. He was killed.
But on Sunday, family, friends and dozens of other firefighters remembered and honored his life.
"He was loved by so many people and they're here to show their respect," said King's longtime girlfriend, Sonja Carson. Carson was King's girlfriend of 21 years. She says his death has been nothing short of heartbreaking. But she knows he died doing what he loved along side the men and women who lay their lives on the line for their community.
"They give up their time for other people to save their lives, their properties. They just need their respect," said Carson.
Firefighters rang a bell to symbolize the last alarm for their fallen brother.
His life is gone, but not forgotten by those whom he loved and served beside.
"The fire service is a strong brotherhood and sisterhood. And when something like this happens, it really shows," said Chief of the Davis Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Jeff Snodgrass.
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declared October 21st as Firefighter Memorial Day. Flags will be ordered to half staff across the state on that day.
