An inspirational ceremony took place for hundreds of families of West Virginia, Sunday afternoon. They were honored for what their loved ones did, because before they lost their lives they gave life by being a donor.
Last year, Sherri Lewis' daughter ended up donating life by being an organ donor. Leslie died at just 25-years old. That's when Sherri made the ultimate decision. "When she said that her liver could save two people, of course we couldn't say no," she said.
Sherri and her husband turned to CORE (The Center For Organ Recovery And Education). Soon Leslie's organs were donated, giving life to a complete stranger.
On Sunday, Sherri was just one of the hundreds of people who were honored. CORE thanked the families because their loved ones donated an organ, tissue, or cornea to someone who was clinging to life.
"To celebrate this day is just a wonderful opportunity and a wonderful opportunity for the CORE staff to say thank you to these families," said Susan Stuart, CEO and President of CORE.
Quilts lined the hallways filled with pictures of organ donors. Those pictures may be all that Sherri has to remember Leslie, but she says her daughter is a hero and she finds happiness knowing Leslie saved someone's life.
"Whoever got them, that will be a part of her living on," said Sherri.
