Kanawha County commissioners are trying to save the water in the town of Pratt.
The town and the town's water system are in a legal mess and owe the Internal Revenue Service about $130,000.
The county commission discussed the town's problems Thursday evening.
Commission President Kent Carper said the commission is working with the town to ensure water service is not interrupted while a solution is being worked out.
"We are going to see to it that 500 families have clean water. They're taxpayers, too. It's cheaper to put an end to this than to let them go into receivership or let the place crash," Carper said.
There is a plan to eventually sell the town's water system to West Virginia American Water. The county is helping with legal fees for the town.
