A 70-year-old man is in jail after police said he assaulted a police officer.
Danny L. Thompson was arrested Wednesday night by the Athens County Sheriff’s Department and charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct by intoxication.
Police said an off-duty officer was at a gas station when he noticed Thompson staggering in the parking lot. The deputy asked if he was OK as he tried to get into his vehicle and drive away. The deputy stopped him and that is when police said he started punching the officer. When other officers arrived, the suspect allegedly started kicking them.
