Monday marked a proud day for dozens of people in the capital city as they became official American citizens.
Nearly 60 people took their oath of citizenship Monday morning during a naturalization ceremony at the Robert C. Byrd Federal Building in Charleston.
To become a U.S. citizen, immigrants must live in America for at least five years, or be married to an American citizen and live here for three years.
New citizens also must know how to read, speak and write the English language and pass a test on American history.
The newest American citizens come from countries including India, Syria and Thailand among about a dozen others.
Tigist Geberehiwot of Ethiopia said this is a day she has been waiting for, for a long time.
Members of Kanawha Voters Registration also were on hand to make sure people had the opportunity to register in time for the November election.
