An ancient piece of a Charleston church has been frozen in time.
A time capsule was discovered when the Central United Methodist Church was torn down a few months ago.
In the midst of that demolition, the church retrieved a safe containing items from 1992, and a box dating back to 1913.
"It's sort of like receiving a call from 100 years ago. How would you feel if you got a call and on the other end there was a voice from 100 years ago," said Lay Leader, Carr Grubb.
After nearly a century, it was finally time to take a look back in time
88-year old Noble Connor had the honor. His father was one of the members who helped make the capsule.
Inside the box was a very fragile Bible, a list of church members, newspaper clippings, and Hymnals from 1913. And inside the safe, VCR tapes with recorded history of the church.
Physical proof of just how much has changed. "We all know in this faith that things are always changing. I mean, the only thing we can count on is that things will change," said Pastor of Canaan United Methodist Church, Johnna Russo.
And now Central United is starting a new chapter and merging with Canaan United Methodist.
Together, the two congregations plan to make a new time capsule to be opened in the next 100 years or so.
"I think that a hymnal and a Bible are the foundations of our faith. So hopefully, those two things will be included," said Russo.
"We hope that Canaan will move forward and that future generations will have days like this," said Grubb.
