A barbershop in Institute was heavily damaged Friday morning after a fire apparently started in an apartment located behind the business.
The blaze occurred about 9:15 a.m. at the Don Juan Barbershop on Fairlawn Avenue, located directly across the road from Wallace Hall on the campus of West Virginia State University.
There were five people inside the barbershop at the time the fire broke out. Someone outside the building saw the gray smoke, which quickly turned black, and went inside to tell the people to get out. Those five individuals escaped the building without harm as the building quickly caught fire.
Firefighters continued to dump water on the building as of about 10:30 a.m. Firefighters cleared the scene early this afternoon.
Witnesses at the scene said the fire appeared to come from the apartment building toward the back of the barbershop. It's believed that apartment was vacant at the time.
