A local program is under way to help protect our hunters as they hit the woods this year.
The Hunting Incident Academy is going on this week at Chief Logan State Park.
Forty officers from 16 states are participating to teach Natural Resources police officers how to investigate a shooting incident involving a hunter.
The goal of the training is to understand why and how these hunting incidents occur and how to keep them from happening in the future.
"Sometimes there's a crime involved, most often not. But we need to know what really happened so we can use that for the prevention in the future," said retired Conservation Officer Mike Van Durme.
The training exercises will take place throughout the rest of the week.
