One man was jailed after police said he broke into a home in Nitro, stole a safe and then fled the scene.
Richard Matthew Gladfelter, 35, of Nitro is charged with nighttime burglary. It happened about 2 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 2800 block of 28th Street.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the front door open and the back window had been broken out of the residence, Patrolman H. R. Blake II, public information/media relations officer for the Nitro Police said.
Police said the person who lived there was not home at the time of the incident, but told officers that a safe was missing.
Police said Lt. C. A. Greene found Gladfelter hiding behind a home on 39th Street, where he confessed to stealing the safe. Officers found that safe in a bush behind his home on 31st Street, police said.
