West Virginia environmental activist Larry Gibson has died. He was 66.
The Keeper of the Mountains Foundation says on its website that Gibson died from a heart attack Sunday morning at his home on Kayford Mountain in Raleigh County.
Gibson was a longtime opponent of mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia. The foundation says he spoke at schools, churches and public gatherings across the country.
Gibson founded the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation in 2004. He also was a member of the Ohio Valley Environmental Council's board.
The foundation says a private funeral will be held. A public memorial service will be announced later.
