An online report on OMG FACTS claims there are more pizza joints in Huntington than there are fitness clubs in the entire state of West Virginia.
Eyewitness News decided to challenge this report and investigate. We found there are about 50 pizza parlors in town. As far as the number of fitness clubs, we did a Google search on major cities in the state and clearly found way more than 50 gyms. Keep in mind, there are still smaller towns that also have fitness clubs.
Michele Muth, the marketing director for Marshall University's Recreation Center, said, "We've done so much in Huntington to promote fitness and being fit with adults and children. It seems that every other weekend we have races, too. I just don't buy into a report like that."
Huntington is a college town and pizza is a favorite. In fact, three pizza restaurants opened on Fourth Avenue in the past couple months.
On the flip side, there are several programs around town promoting better health, some of which began a couple years ago after Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution put Huntington on the map for unhealthy eating habits.
