An Ohio man was arrested after he allegedly led police on a pursuit with 4-year-old son sitting in the back seat of his vehicle, troopers said.
Jeffrey L. Chapple Jr., 21, of Hilliard was charged Sept. 2 with felony fleeing and eluding, child endangerment, driving on a suspended license and operating a vehicle with no headlights, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers from the Portsmouth Patrol Post were involved in a pursuit about 8 p.m. on U.S. 23 in Scioto County that ended at the western side of the Department of Energy Reservation in Pike County. The vehicle was stopped on U.S. 23 near mile marker 15 for driving without headlights on, the release said. The driver of the vehicle initially pulled off onto the berm of the road, but the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed when the trooper approached.
The driver eventually exited U.S. 23 at the on ramp to the Department of Energy Reservation, and the vehicle was spotted in a publicly accessible area in a gravel parking lot, where the suspect was taken into custody, the release said.
Police said the 4-year-old was sitting in a safety seat in the back seat. A female passenger also was in the vehicle.
