James Hunter comes from a background of law enforcement officers. His father was a Barboursville police officer. Hunter said, "It made a big impression on me and when I got out of the military, I couldn't think of anything else I wanted to do except put on a uniform again and serve the community."
Thursday afternoon, he got a chance to follow in his footsteps, being sworn-in as a Huntington police officer. He said, "Endless possibilities, exciting future. A little nerve-racking as well."
Huntington police chief Skip Holbrook said, "I think these officers are the cream of the crop. We're really pleased with their background and the diversity from where they come from. It's a very good opportunity for us to grow as a department and it's a great opportunity for them to start an exciting profession."
This brings the total number of officers to 103. Holbrook said, "I think there's a direct correlation between having the right staffing levels and our successes with some of our crime reduction initiative."
He said what happened to fellow law enforcement officers in Clay County this week reinforces the sacrifices officers are willing to make when they take this oath.
"We are in an extraordinarily dangerous time for some reason, and people do things that are just unexplainable." He continued, "Police officers are heroic and the threats and situations that they deal with daily is unimaginable really."
The three new officers will train at the state police academy before returning to Huntington for assignment. "It's a long process, but it feels very rewarding to be here today," said Hunter.
