In Roane County, a community is gathering around a sheriff deputy who remains under intensive care after Tuesday night's shoot out.
John Westfall was shot three times in the gun battle. Westfall's family told Eyewitness News he was shot three times in the abdomen, shoulder and right hand.
Westfall, a father of three was rushed into surgery early Wednesday morning.
Officials believe the bullet proof vest Westfall was wearing may have saved his life.
Close friend and Co Worker Sgt. John Caldwell was one of the first on the scene.
"I was shocked - everything was spinning," Caldwell said. "I thought, hang in there, hes my friend, he's like a brother."
Westfall's family said they are expecting him to recover, he remains under intensive care.
