Kelly Moles’ daughter Ava was born with a congenital heart defect. "It can be a perfectly healthy pregnancy and a beautiful healthy baby; you just never know," Moles said. "There's lot of kids born with a CHD (Congenital Heart Defect). I never knew until her, but it's very, very common." Heart disease is not only the No. 1 killer for men and women in America. It's also the leading cause of infant death from birth defects. Ava had open heart surgery at about 4 months old. "She was out of the hospital after open heart surgery in seven days,” Moles said. “She goes back for her checkups and they say she looks great." Ava will need another surgery several years down the road, but for now, she has plenty of energy to keep up with her sisters, Alaina and Alivia. Moles’ daughter and her fellow sweet heart survivors, Baylee and Karli, are heading up this year's campaign to raise money and awareness about heart defects and heart disease for the 2012 greater Charleston Heart Walk. "It's good to have a support system; it's also good for her to see that she's not alone," Moles said. The trio is each rallying support to get the whole community involved in raising money that helps fund life-saving research for heart disease. Moles said they try to raise money in several different ways. "We involve our church family a lot. They helped us with the heart walk last year. She's going to be starting preschool this year. We're going to see if some of her friends from school want to walk with us this year, so that should be fun," she said. If you want to join Ava, Baylee and Karli in the fight against heart disease, this year's walk is 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Capitol Complex.
