Nicholas County volunteers Wednesday spruced up the Veterans Memorial Park. It's part of the county's demo project – a dry run for how things will go when 40,000 Boy Scouts descend on West Virginia next summer for their 2013 National Jamboree.
As part of the event, scouts will perform a day of service, traveling to nine different West Virginia counties to do work like this.
Since you can't just plop thousands of scouts down in the middle of the Mountain State and say "go get 'em," serious planning is under way to make sure the scouts are fed, have the proper tools and are safe while they give their time and effort to dozens of communities.
It's estimated the scouts will perform 300,000 hours of community service during the Jamboree. Five days during the 10-day event will be dedicated to the volunteer projects.
