With great food, lively music and games, the Wayne County Fair was full of all the usual fair festivities last year. But the fair definitely had something missing – there were no rides.
Fair organizers paid a $5,000 deposit to a Kentucky-based company last year, but the rides were a no-show. This year, organizers are not taking any chances; the fair is at Camden Park.
"We're guaranteed to have rides,” Wayne County Fair Board President Gary Napier said. “They're inspected on a regular basis, and they have a new ride, the Rattler, so a lot of kids are excited about that."
That is what most of the kids Eyewitness News talked to are looking forward to the most. Camden Park has 30 rides for fair-goers to take advantage of this week.
After having the event for decades at the Wayne County police farm, the fair board decided to move the venue. The fair board is down to about 10 members, and the preparation for the fair is a big responsibility.
"For 10 people to get the police farm ready, and be responsible for hiring security, trash pickup, getting the grounds ready, tear-down, setup, it's going to be, we feel like, a lot less responsibility on our shoulders," Napier said.
So fair board members are hoping to continue this long-standing tradition, in this unique new way.
Gates open at 4 p.m. through Friday. On Friday, the gates will open at 2 p.m. Admission is $12 and includes rides and parking. For the full schedule of events, you can check out http://waynecountyfair-wv.com/.
