The body of a missing Fayette County man has been found.
David Jones, 47, of Powellton was found in the Kanawha River just west of Gauley Bridge about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a news release.
Jones' body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Police are still investigating the incident.
======================================================
The Fayette County man went missing Saturday night after he tried to swim across the Kanawha River. 47-year-old David Jones of Powellton disappeared in the Kanawha Falls area. The search began Sunday. His sister, Tina Jones, did not understand why the group of people with him took so long to call for help.
Searchers Monday used an underwater camera after a cadaver dog focused the search Sunday not far from where the man was last seen. It’s an area about a mile from the falls.
No foul play is suspected, but deputies are also puzzled why it took more than two hours to call for help after a swimming race between two men ended with one of them underwater. They will keep their investigation open until they are able to conduct an autopsy.
Searchers have not been able to locate the victim.
