Just in the past four months, Wayne County 911 has dealt with two widespread disasters and relief efforts in Wayne County. First, the tornadoes that hit in March, then massive power outages and storm damage just a couple weeks ago.
Operations manager James Cooper says, "It's been busy!" While they were able to successfully coordinate those efforts... in just a couple months, they'll have a state of the art facility to house a more efficient emergency operations center. Cooper says, "We could do it in the old building, but it was tight on space. The computer network was limited. In the new building, it's all different. It's all new."
About 90 percent of the work is finished on the new 7,000 square foot facility that's just a few hundred yards away from the current facility.
They're putting the finishing touches on painting, wiring, and ceiling work over the next month. Then, dispatchers will have brand new technology that will not only help them, but also all the agencies and residents that connect to the 911 center. Cooper says, "It's great. We've been waiting so long to get in the new building and it's been several years of planning to get to the point and everyone's excited."
County administrator Brett Jones says, "The commission is proud to bring this desperately needed facility to the county and look forward to the completion of the building and to begin using the services shortly." He continues, "We are proud of the progress and the way this new building will convert a parking lot into a vital county building."
The move should start on August 27th, and it will take about two months to get everything settled and running in the new building.
