A magistrate said: " You've been charged with first degree murder. Do you understand that ,sir? ' "Yeah. "Brent Burdette seemed high and appeared to fall asleep as the 19-year-old was arraigned for taking a human life with a shotgun.
Court documents allege a man showed saying he wanted to fight Brent Burdette at a trailer on Elaine Drive in Rand early Thursday-- and that Burdette grabbed a gun, walked outside and fired a shot. 21-year-old William Cordle of Rand ended up dead in a roadside ditch.
A witness who saw the victim stagger into the ditch talked to Burdette before he ran out of the trailer. Burdette allegedly told her he shot Cordle because he "ran his mouth." Others were shocked by what they saw.
Detectives say some type of disagreement took place between the two men before the gunplay, but did not say what that was.
