Since it may be still several days for some people to get their lights back on, a lot of folks are desperate to find other ways to get power. Even if that means waiting for hours in the scorching heat to get what's now become a hot commodity.
There was a line around the corner at Cabela's brand new store in Charleston. The store isn't even opened yet but a whole lot of people came out to stand in line for a generator.
"I just jumped in the truck and said, 'I've got a jug of water and I got to go out there'," Fred Lane of St. Albans says.
Lane was the first in line. He arrived at the store at 10am Tuesday even though the truck with the generators wasn't supposed to arrive until noon because he says he's been looking for a generator since the storm hit on Friday and he hasn't found one yet. And he stuck around even after the truck with the generators was delayed three hours.
"I've been here this long, I might as well wait," Lane says.
And lots of people waited right along with him, for hours, in the scorching heat. But even with the delays, the swarm of people kept their cool. Cabela's brought out fans, water, and even food.
The 250 generators finally arrived to cheers. Since the store isn't open, Cabela's had to get a special sales license to sell the generators, they even had to call their tech people in to get the cash registers running.
And Lane says it was worth the five hour wait, saying after all, he would have been waiting in the heat at home.
"Feels pretty good, it will feel even better when I get home," Lane said after his generator was loaded up.
Cabela's is expecting a second truck load of generators on Thursday. The store, which is by the Home Depot in Corridor G, officially opens August 9th.
