The powerful storm forced drivers to wait in hour long lines for gas all across West Virginia, on Saturday.

The waiting game started early with cars backed up for miles.

Cars were at a gridlock and snaked along in Alum Creek, Route 119, Washington Street in Charleston and at other gas stations throughout the state.

"I'm down to one mile on my thing, so I better get some gas," said Tim Hudson of Lincoln County.

The backup was caused by the storm with people needing gas to get home and a lot of people out getting gas for generators.

But they had to wait because only a handful of stations were able to provide it. If the stations didn't have power then the pumps didn't work.

"When you just did all your grocery shopping, you gotta do what you can to save it," said John Parker from Alum Creek.

People in Alum Creek weren't so lucky. By 12:30 p.m., the Sunoco was forced to close because they ran out of gas. We're told their gas provider didn't have power to provide extra fuel so they had to close up.

"It's a ripple effect. So until the power starts to come on, people are going to have the gas they have and they're probably not going to be able to get any more," explained Director of OES, Allen Holder.

And for people like Charleen Pridemore, waiting is worth it. She says if she didn't get gas for her generator at home, she and her husband would be left in the dark and the extreme heat. "The food would be going bad, and where he has problems breathing he wouldn't have anything to cool him down."

Desperate times called for desperate measures. And for some, it was almost a trip back in time.

"It kind of reminds me when I was in high school in 1974 with the oil embargo," said Bill Bowes of Lincoln County.
