"I heard a noise that sounded like rain, and then it sounded like somebody was throwing gravel at the back of the house. I opened the door to look out. I opened the door and this side, where the carport is was ablaze," says homeowner Jeffrey Davis. He worked quickly to get his wife, teen daughters, and son out safely... along with two cats and a dog. Then, called for help, and grabbed a fire extinguisher and a hose, and did what he could to fight the flames until fire crews got on scene.
Davis says, "We tried to save it, that's what we were doing until they got here."
Neighbors came running to help. Son Dalton Davis says, "I came around the corner I see the fire and I just go to find out what I can do and I see a guy running back and forth to the pool with a bucket and just filled in."
Dad says, "We had our own little water reserve."
In doing so, firefighters told the family they probably saved the house. Jeffrey Davis says, "They said we managed to keep it under control."
While there is extensive damage to the back area of the house along County Road 18, it's not a total loss.
"I'm real lucky. Friends and neighbors and they were right there. They were right in the midst of it and didn't ask for nothing and you can't ask for better than that. God was smiling on us."
