Firefighters were called to the Jefferson Motel in Kanawha County just before 1 o'clock this morning.
There were no flames but there was a lot of smoke coming from the office area.
Firefighters had to cut holes in the roof to find the source.
Investigators say the cause of the smoke was a grease fire in the kitchen.
