31-year old Joseph Pike Dempsey appears before Kanawha County Magistrate Julie Yeager, accused of robbing the 5/3 bank at 4515 MacCorkle Avenue in Charleston last Thursday.
Dempsey allegedly pointed a gun and ordered the tellers on the floor before grabbing some cash and getting away.
Sgt. Bobby Eggleton with the Charleston Police Department says it is a relief to get a suspect behind bars, because bank robbers don't usually take over a facility when they hit it.
Dempsey was already in jail because the day after the robbery he was allegedly involved in an altercation with his King Street neighbors in South Charleston. He's accused of punching a man, hitting another with a stick and pulling a gun. Officers say he resisted arrest and had to be pepper sprayed and tasered.
Patrolman Justin Bailes with the South Charleston Police Department says Dempsey initially cooperated with officers but began fighting when he was informed he was under arrest.
South Charleston officers thought Dempsey resembled the sketch of the bank robbery suspect. A bank employee identified him from a photo lineup. A search of his home turned up clothing similar to what was used in the robbery and five marijuana plants.
