It's one of the most expensive clothing purchases a woman will make in her lifetime. But most times she only wears it once. A group of senior citizens is recycling and reusing those dresses in an original way. Armelia Pannell and her friends at the Shawnee Senior Center are taking recycling to a whole new level. They're creating things like lamp shades, purses, shower curtains, and even table runners all from one garment.. a wedding dress. "We want to share this idea with the community and with the world because it's such a novel idea," said Shawnee-Dunbar Senior Center President Savolia Joyce. These two ladies along with about a dozen others take used dresses donated to them or purchased from places like the Salvation Army and Goodwill. The group is hoping to display the one-of-a-kind items eventually but they also have other goals. "We're hoping it will be nationwide.. anyone with a wedding gown, that's who this is for," said Shawnee-Dunbar Senior Center Director Armelia Pannell. In order to spread the word, they're writing a book about the dresses and publishing pictures as well. So the next time you open your closet or go to the attic and stumble upon your wedding dress or your mom's gown, take it out of the bag and just imagine what you could make out of it. "When you do this you have to be patient, it takes time. But that's the best part!" said Pannell. "It really has been a rewarding experience for me," said Joyce. Recently the woman in the Shawnee Senior Group combined with the Dunbar Senior Group. However, the two groups still work out of separate facilities. The problem is there isn't a facility large enough for both groups to gather. They hope to soon find a new place so they can all enjoy creating the items. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
