A local funeral home is in some hot water accused of misusing money.
Tuesday the WV Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit against Elk Funeral Home in Charleston, saying they embezzled more than 60 thousand dollars.
The funeral home's director Billy Surratt is accused of misappropriating funds belonging to at least 16 people who paid in advance for funeral arrangements. Under state law, the AG's office is suppose to be notified when someone pays in advance.
The AG'S office began investigating in February, when a woman contacted them over her mother's contract with the funeral home. They discovered the funeral director had spent the money.
Now the AG's office is hoping to prevent the Elk Funeral Home from ever dealing with pre paid contracts again. They go to court June 6th.
