The 1985 film adaptation of the Pulitzer-prize winning book "The Color Purple" was filled with heavy, dramatic moments.

Chronicling the hard times and tough life of an African-American woman named Celie, it showed her struggle against cruelty and pain.

That seems unlikely material for a musical adaptation, but the Charleston Light Opera Guild production of "The Color Purple" focuses on Celie's path to freedom and her unwavering faith.

CLOG is the country's first community theater group to be granted the rights to "The Color Purple".

Taking place in rural Georgia in the early 20th century, the show spans 40 years as Celie grows, gets pregnant and marries the controlling farmer named Mister. But using a score that features a blend of gospel, blues, soul and traditional musical theater...the story manages to soar as all of the characters...including Mister...find redemption before their journey comes to a close.

As a musical, "The Color Purple" is a bit different than its source novel or more famous movie cousin. But like those works...it showcases the power of change....and is an inspirational story of love overcoming all obstacles.
