DEP Issues Statement About Vehicle In River

Search crews from the Charleston Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard continue to look for a vehicle which crashed into the Kanawha River around 5:00 pm Thursday afternoon. Witnesses say the vehicle entered the river near the intersection of U.S. Route 119 and MacCorkle Avenue.
While the identity of the driver has not been confirmed, the Department of Environmental Protection has issued the following statement regarding the DEP's possible connection with the accident.
"From witness accounts, it appears that the vehicle involved in the accident on Thursday evening was assigned to the DEP; however, until the vehicle is retrieved we cannot verify that information. The police have not confirmed the identity of the driver or whether there were other occupants in the vehicle. Therefore, it is premature for us to comment on the identity of the driver until we have confirmation."
